Number 3 Welsh Wing Inter-Wing Athletic Championships 2010

Inter-Wing Athletics - RAF Cosford - Sunday 23rd May 2010

Overview by: Wing Commander Wilson____________________________________________________________________

The athletics team from 3 Welsh Wing travelled to RAF Cosford for the Inter Wing Athletics competition, and on the hottest day of the year (over 27 degrees) they put up a credible performance against the best cadets in the Region.

Before the team had left South Wales, it had been depleted from the 50 (originally selected) to 36, some of which were second or third choice athletes, but despite this every cadet representing 3 Welsh Wing did so with 100% commitment.

The team collected only one gold medal, when Cdt Frankie Sopuluchku (561 Sqn), won the Junior Men's Javelin with a distance of over 40 metres, beating the second place by more than 5 meters.
Other successes included silver medals fro Cpl Nathan Messer and Cdt Yusef Abubaker (215 Sqn) Cpl Sam Collins (360 Sqn), Cpl G Davies (621 Sqn) and bronze medals for Cpl K Nelson and Cpl Nathan Messer (215 Sqn), Cdt Frankie Sopuluchku (561 Sqn), Cpl Daniel Allen (1429 Sqn) and Cdt Jennine Sprague (1574 Sqn), who won two bronze medals.
The team were ably supported by Sqn Ldr Chris Ford (3WW Sports Officer), Flt Lt Mandy Ford (OC 1429 Sqn and team manager), Sgt Michelle Thomas (360 Sqn) and CI Tom Taylor (1429 Sqn), who between them helped mark and score the long jump events throughout the day, and to ensure all the cadets were in the right place at the right time for their events.
The character of the team was demonstrated by Cdt B Osmond (215 Sqn), who after two of her 4 laps in the 1500 meters, developed a painful stitch but sill went on to gain 4th place.
