Blackham Bronze

During a recent visit to 499 (Port Talbot) Squadron, Group Captain Allen presented Cadet Warrant Officer Gethin Davies with the Blackham Bronze Trophy for 2009. To be chosen as the Best Male Cadet in the Wales and West Region of the Air Training Corps, which comprises almost 6000 cadets was a superb achievement for Gethin, but little did he know that within just a few short weeks that his efforts and outstanding service within the Corps over the last 5 years would be acknowledged by receiving the accolade of “Best Male Cadet in the Air Training Corps for 2009”.

Camp at Lyneham 2009

Thirty cadets from 3WW enjoyed an enormously successful camp at RAF Lyneham ('The Home of the Hercules') over Easter. Highlights of the week included seeing how all the sections of the camp work together to keep the Hercules fleet flying (the Camp Commandant was grateful that 'Bite The Boss' is no longer a standard part of the RAF Police Dog Section visit), as well as shooting and a superb night exercise. There were also a number of visits off-station to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at RNAS Yeovilton, to RAF Colerne for flying, to RAF Odiham to see helicopters working at close hand and for a lucky few, to RAF Brize Norton for a trip over the North Sea, refuelling Tornado.

BEL Course 2009
BEL Course at Afan Argoed

On a cold mountainside overlooking the Afan Argoed country park, the 14 candidates on a 3 Welsh Wing BEL course had set up camp for the Easter weekend, as part of their two day training session, which included camping out in the cold nights of April. The first morning they left their tents, they found frost on the grass and a definite chill in the air. The 3WW course is being run by qualified staff, who between them have a vast array of qualifications to lead and assess the training.
