3 Welsh Wing Celebrate in Style________________
Parade overview kindly supplied by Wing Commander Wilson:
During the dark years of the Second World War, a new organisation was formed, that allowed young men to learn about aviation, it was called the Air Training Corps. 1941 was also the year that saw the birth of ‘Bugs Bunny’ and the death of Lord Baden Powel (founder of the Boy Scouts) and during a period of three days saw the Blitz arrive in Swansea.
During the 70 years since its formation, the Air Cadets organisation has changed in many ways but it still holds true to the ethos and standards it set itself in 1941.

No 3 Welsh Wing decided to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its formations at meetings held between OC 3 Welsh Wing, Wg Cdr Bob Wilson and his Wing Staff Officers nearly two years before the event was set to take place on Saturday 2nd April 2011. The job of 70th Anniversary Project Manager was given to Sqn Ldr Mike Lovering, Deputy OC 3WW, and he set up a committee that was to lead to the most exciting day in the history of the No 3 Welsh Wing, involving HRH The Duke of Gloucester.
On the morning of the parade, all cadets and staff were formed up at the TA Centre, Richardson Street, Swansea for inspection by the 3WW Warrant Officer, WO Phil Morgan. The scene of 250 cadets on parade, plus 24 standard bearers, plus the band of over 80 cadets was an impressive sight for HRH Duke of Gloucester to witness on his arrival.
He was wearing the uniform of Air Chief Marshal from the Royal Air Force and was met by the Lord Lieutenant Byron Lewis who introduced him to the senior guests of honour Air Vice Marshal Brian Lucas (3WW President), Air Commodore Barbra Cooper (AOC Air Cadets), Air Commodore Dai Williams (AOC Wales RAF), Group Captain Richard Allen (Wales & West Regional Commandant), Counsellor Richard Lewis (Lord Mayor of Swansea), High Sheriff and various other MPs, AMs and local dignitaries.
He was led to inspect the cadets and staff by Sqn Ldr Chris Ford (Parade Commander) and smiled all through the inspection and at the end, he retreated into the TA Centre with the Lord Lieutenant while the parade formed up for the march through Swansea to St Mary’s church (which was hit during the Blitz of 1941).
